Welcome back to Country Music 4 Ever! Since the beginning, country music has always been sung by and performed for the common man. Country music has never been about huge superstars, even though that does play a part in it. It has always been about everyday people singing songs that people can relate to. John Conlee even had a hit with a song called “Common Man.”
If you listen to country music lyrics, you’ll notice most songs are written about everyday tasks. In Thomas Rhett and Riley Green’s hit song “Half of Me,” they open with the line “I’m supposed to mow the grass today, I’m supposed to fix the fence.” That’s such a simple line, but it shows you they are just two normal guys.
Toby Keith sang about everyday tasks in multiple songs. For example, in his hit “You Ain’t Much Fun” he sings about painting the house, mending the fence, feeding the dog, and sacking the trash.
This is part of why I love country music. The songs you hear on the radio are sung by real life people doing real life chores. Loretta Lynn sang a lot about raising babies and taking care of a house, which is all she knew before becoming famous, but that made her relatable to many women.
Another example is Kelsea Ballerini’s song "I CAN"T HELP MYSELF" off of her album “SUBJECT TO CHANGE." She sings the very simple line “I could do a load of laundry that’s just been sitting dirty.” I don’t think it gets more real life than that. If you listen close to any Kelsea album, she always has very relatable lyrics.
There are so many others I could mention, but I’d love to hear your favorite relatable line in country music. Let me know in the comments.
Thanks for reading. I’ll be back soon!
