Welcome back to Country Music 4 Ever! The next “Country Music 4 Ever Country Legend Highlight” is Tammy Wynette. Tammy made her debut in country music in 1966 and has earned 20 number one songs.
She was born Virginia Wynette Pugh on May 5, 1942, in Itawamba county, Mississippi. She got married as a teenager, and had two kids within three years. Her husband was a construction worker, but he was unemployed most of the time. They were eventually forced to move into an abandoned log house with no indoor plumbing. Tammy eventually enrolled in beauty school and even kept her beautician's license up-to-date knowing she could go back to that if she needed.
After becoming a beautician, Tammy moved to Alabama, where she gave birth to her third daughter, who only weighed 1 lb. 8 oz. when she was born. Her marriage ended in divorce, and Tammy began making regular trips to Nashville in 1965. After months of rejection, Tammy decided to move to Nashville with her three young daughters, so she could pursue music full time. She eventually auditioned for Epic Records, and finally got the record deal she worked so hard for.
Tammy went on to sell more than 30 million records, grossing more than 100 million dollars.
Throughout the month, I will be posting fun facts about Tammy on Facebook and Reddit, so stay tuned for that.
Thanks for reading. I'll be back soon!
