Welcome back to Country Music 4 Ever! In 2014 Darius Rucker released an album called “Home for the Holidays.” He had two original Christmas songs on the album. I am going to talk about one of them today. The song is called “What God Wants for Christmas.” I think this is one of the most well written Christmas songs of all time. In the beginning of the song, he is sitting at a red light and he sees snow falling on a manger scene. It makes him think about what God would want for Christmas. I never really thought about what God would want for Christmas. He gave us his only son, which was the best gift in the history of the world. In the song, he says God might want peace on earth or no more empty seats in church. He later says God might want every Bible to not have any dust on it or he might want the devil to give up. I’m sure God would like all of these things. We can never repay him for what he gave us though.
Darius wrote the song “Candy Cane Christmas,” which is also on the album “Home for the Holidays.” He really liked that song, but he knew he wanted to write a religious song for the album too. When a songwriter named Monte Criswell told Darius he wanted to write a song called “What God Wants for Christmas” Darius loved the idea. The first thing Darius did was google “What God Wants for Christmas” and it turned out no one had ever written a song with that title before. When he found out no one had ever written a song with that title, he knew it was the perfect title. He was right, it is the perfect title for the song.
Let me know your thoughts on this song. Thanks for reading, I’ll be back soon!
