Welcome back to Country Music 4 Ever! Studies show that only 16 percent of country singers are women, and only 12 percent of country songwriters are women. Since such a small amount of country singers are women we should want to listen to their music to hear what they have to say. The best way to do that is to listen to the radio. The only problem is the radio has some ridiculous rules for women, such as you can’t play two women back to back. There are other ridiculous rules I won’t get into now. I looked at all of the number one songs on the “Billboard Country Airplay Chart” since 2013. There were multiple songs that featured women, but I’m only going to talk about solo songs by women.
There weren’t any number one songs by a solo female artist in 2013 so I will move on to 2014.
In 2014, Maddie and Tae were the only female artists who had a solo number one song. The song they hit number one with was “Girl in a Country Song.”
In 2015, Kelsea Ballerini was the only female artist who had a solo number one song. The song she hit number one with was “Love Me Like You Mean It.”
In 2016, Kelsea Ballerini and Carrie Underwood each hit number one twice. Kelsea did so with her songs “Dibs” and “Peter Pan.” And Carrie did so with her songs “Heartbeat” and “Church Bells.”
In 2017, Lauren Alaina and Carly Pearce were the only female artists who hit number one with solo songs. Lauren hit number one with “Road Less Traveled.” And Carly hit number one with “Every Little Thing.”
In 2018, Maren Morris and Kelsea Ballerini were the only female artists who hit number one with solo songs. Maren hit number one with “I Could Use a Love Song.” And Kelsea hit number one with “Legends.”
In 2019, Maren Morris was the only female artist who hit number one with a solo song. She did so with her song “Girl.”
In 2020, there were four number ones by female artists. Maren Morris hit number one with “The Bones,” Gabby Barrett hit number one with “I Hope,” Miranda Lambert hit number one with “Bluebird,” and Maddie and Tae hit number one with “Die From a Broken Heart.”
In 2021, Gabby Barrett and Lainey Wilson were the only female artists who hit number one with solo songs. Gabby hit number one with “The Good Ones.” And Lainey hit number one with “Things a Man Oughta Know.”
In 2022, there were actually two all female duets, so I will include them on this list. The first one was “Drunk (And I Don’t Wanna Go Home)” by Miranda Lambert and Elle King. And the other one was “Never Wanted To Be That Girl” by Carly Pearce and Ashley McBryde.
I think there should’ve been more than the 19 I just listed. I’d like to hear what you think about this.
Thanks for reading, I’ll be back soon!
