Welcome back to Country Music 4 Ever! This holiday season, 119.3 million people are expected to travel 50 or more miles between December 21 and January 1, which would make this a record-breaking year.
The reason I mention this is that no matter where people live, they always come back home for Christmas. Whether you live five minutes from where you grew up or five hours from where you grew up, so many people find it so important to come back home for the holidays.
Many songs have been written about coming home for Christmas, but the one I want to discuss today might not be one you would expect.
The song I’m going to discuss is “Tennessee Christmas” by Amy Grant. I know what you’re thinking, Amy Grant is not a country singer, but this song has been covered by many country artists and has become a classic country Christmas song.
Amy wrote this song in 1983 with her then-husband, Gary Chapman. The song talks about how special Christmas is in Tennessee, but for me, it goes way beyond that.
Whether you’re from California, Texas, New York, or anywhere in between, you can relate to this song. I know it focuses on Tennessee, but the main idea of the song is that a Tennessee Christmas is the only Christmas for her because that’s where she’s from. We will only know what Christmas is like where we live.
If you are used to a foot of snow on Christmas, then you don’t know what it’s like to spend Christmas on a beach in California. Or if you are used to Christmas on a beach, then you don’t know what it’s like to spend Christmas in Colorado. This is the kind of image this song shows us. What we think of when we think of Christmas is based on where we live.
Thanks for reading. I’ll be back soon!
