Welcome back to Country Music 4 Ever! Everybody knows that George Strait is the king of country music, but I’ve often wondered why there is not a queen of country music. I know people have called many women over the years the queen of country music, but there has never been one woman who was actually given that title. I think the reason behind this is that it would not be fair for only one woman to be given this title. No offense to the other men in country music, because there are some that I like just as much as George Strait. But there’s something special about the women of country music. So instead of telling you who I would give this title to, I want to talk about several country music queens who have helped shape country music.

The first woman I want to talk about is Kitty Wells. Kitty was the first solo woman to have a number one hit on the country charts. The song was “It Wasn’t God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels.” Even though this song was banned on some radio stations and on the Grand Ole Opry, it still managed to go number one. This is pretty impressive considering this was in the 1950s, and women typically didn’t do things that men did back then.

The next woman on the list is Loretta Lynn. Loretta has had 14 songs banned from country radio over the course of her career. I personally think this is a great thing. She wasn’t afraid of what people thought when she sang “The Pill” or “Rated X” (which by the way “Rated X” was not a dirty song, but people thought it was because of the title.) Loretta was willing to take the risk of getting banned just to be able to speak the truth in her music. I think that is pretty awesome.

The last woman I want to talk about is Tammy Wynette. Tammy is like Kitty and Loretta, because her songs told stories from a woman’s point of view. Which at the time was still a brand new concept, because country music has always been ruled by men. Her song “Stand by your Man” went to number one on the country charts and number 19 on the pop charts. It also became the best selling single by a woman in the history of country music.

These are just a few country music queens. I know I didn’t mention Dolly or Patsy or a lot of other amazing female country singers, but they are just as worthy of being called a country music queen as the three that I talked about earlier. Let me know who your favorite female country singer is. Thanks for reading, I’ll be back soon!
