Welcome back to Country music 4 ever! Today I am going to talk about my favorite kind of songs in country music, story songs. I have a list of my top five favorite story songs in country music and I know there are a lot of other great story songs that didn’t make the list so please let me know your favorites. Let’s get started.

The song I chose for number five is “Austin” by Blake Shelton. This song tells a story about a guy who doesn’t want to believe his relationship is over with a woman who moved away to Austin Texas. On his answering machine he says “If you’re calling bout the car I sold it, if it’s Tuesday night I’m bowling, if you’ve got something to sell you’re wasting your time I’m not buying, if it’s anyone else wait for the tone you know what to do, and P.S. if this is Austin I still love you.” After a year the woman who moved to Austin calls him and and she can’t believe what she hears on his answering machine. She calls him back a couple days later and they end up falling in love again.

The song at number four is “The Gambler” by Kenny Rogers. In this song he tells a story about meeting a gambler on a train bound for nowhere and the gambler gives him advice such as “You got to know when to hold ‘em, know when to fold ‘em, know when to walk away and know when to run.” As the song comes to an end the gambler ends up dying in his sleep. I know it’s not the happiest of endings but that’s how it is with a lot of good country songs.

The song at number three is “Coat of many colors” by Dolly Parton. This song is about a coat that her mother made for her out of rags when she was a kid and as her mother is making the coat she tells Dolly the story about Joseph in the Bible. The next day when Dolly went to school all the kids made fun of her coat and she tells them that one is only poor only if they choose to be. This is a simple song but it has a good story behind it.

The song at number two is “Whiskey lullaby” by Brad Paisley. This is the saddest song on the list. It is a story about a guy who drinks himself to death because his girlfriend cheated on him. And then later in the song she drinks herself to death because she can’t forgive herself for what she did.

The song at number one is “Don’t take the girl” by Tim McGraw. This song tells the story of Johnny who goes fishing with his dad when he was eight years old. There is a little girl there and Johnny’s dad says they can’t leave her behind but Johnny tells him “Don’t take the girl.” As he gets older Johnny falls in love with the girl and at the end of the song they have a baby and the mother of the baby is not going to survive so Johnny says a prayer for God to take him out of this world but please don’t take the girl.

Please let me know your favorite story songs. I'll be back soon!
