Welcome back to Country Music 4 Ever! It has been one week since Loretta Lynn passed away. Over the past week I have been listening to her music even more than I normally do, and I have been doing some research about her amazing career. So today I am going to do one more blog post in remembrance of her, then I will move on to something else in my next post.
I want you to imagine the “CMA Awards” 50 years ago, way back in 1972. Loretta made history by becoming the first woman to win “Entertainer of The Year” at the 1972 “CMA Awards.” She was up against Merl Haggard, Freddie Hart, Charley Pride, and Jerry Reed. I’m sure no one expected Loretta to win, because it was something a woman never did before. Loretta was the only woman who ever won the awards until 1978 when Dolly Parton won.
It was a very rare and special thing for Loretta to win such a major award, because back then it wasn’t common for women to even have jobs. Women were in charge of staying home with the kids while their husbands were out working. So it was very uncommon for women to become professional singers let alone the “Entertainer of The Year.”
Loretta opened a lot of doors for women in country music. She sang songs about anything she wanted to sing about, and I think because she did that she gave a lot of other women the courage to sing about whatever they wanted to sing about. I honestly think country music would be a lot different without Loretta’s songs. I think we should all be glad that even though she is gone her music is not. Loretta’s music will never die.
Let me know what your favorite song is by Loretta, or what your favorite part of her career was, or anything else you want to say about Loretta. Thanks for reading, I’ll be back soon!
