Welcome back to Country Music 4 Ever! Today is my one hundredth blog post. So, I thought I would do a little throwback today and talk about the first family of country music, the Carter Family.

The Carter Family was one of the very first popular country acts. The group was made up of A.P. Carter, his wife Sara Carter, and Sara’s sister-in-law Maybelle Carter. The group released many songs that people still remember today. They sang songs such as “Keep on the Sunny Side” and “Wildwood Flower.”

The Carter Family was a very successful act in country music. But despite their success, the Carter Family never had a number one song. Not because their songs weren’t good enough, but because the country music charts weren’t around during the Carter Family’s career.

The Carter Family began recording music in 1927, and in 1943, the band broke up. Billboard started to trace the presence of country music on jukeboxes in 1944, one year after the Carter Family broke up. Billboard established their country chart in 1948, and began to track country airplay a year later.

If the country charts were around during the Carter Family’s career, I can guarantee they would’ve gone to number one many times. It’s a shame we can’t look back at the Carter Family’s chart success, but people loved their songs so much, I don’t think it would’ve mattered if they hit number one.

Thanks for reading, please let me know what you think. I’ll be back soon!
