Welcome back to Country Music 4 Ever! Something very interesting and exciting is happening on this week's Mediabase country airplay chart. Women make up 22% of this week's chart. 10 different women are in the top 50 with eleven songs. (Megan Moroney has two.)
Those women include Megan Moroney with “6 Months Later” and “Beautiful Things,” Ella Langley with “Choosin' Texas,” Miranda Lambert with her Chris Stapleton duet, “A Song to Sing,” Meghan Patrick with “Golden Child,” Kelsea Ballerini with “Baggage,” Caroline Jones with “No Tellin',” Lauren Alaina with her Chase Matthew duet “All My Exes,” Alexandra Kay with “Straight For the Heart,” Ashley Cooke with “The Hell You Are,” and Carly Pearce with “Dream Come True.”
Radio airplay for women peaked in the 90s with a record 33%, but since then that number has continued to drop. In 2024, women only made up 8.4% of country airplay. It is very promising for the number to be up at 22% this week because if these songs continue to climb the chart, they could make an impact on the year-end charts this year. I know we're only in January, so we have a lot of new music coming this year, but if these women continue to have charting songs throughout the year, that can be a positive thing for the genre.
Equal play is the thing people always talk about when it comes to women in country music and honestly, it's going to be a long time until we come close to that happening. However, it seems like country music is on the right track. It's a big step to have ten women on the chart at one time, so maybe we are working our way toward equal play.
Thanks for reading. I'll be back soon!
