Welcome back to Country Music 4 Ever! Today, I will continue my series of debut singles with one of the saddest songs in history, "Mommy, Please Stay Home with Me" by Eddy Arnold.
"Mommy, Please Stay Home with Me" was written by Eddy Arnold, Wally Fowler, and Graydon Hall. The song, which was released in 1944, tells the story of a mother who leaves her sick child at home to go out drinking and partying. The child passes away as a result of the mother's actions.
Eddy Arnold was born in Henderson, Tennessee on a farm and he became known as the "Tennessee Plowboy." However, Eddy wanted his music to appeal to a larger audience than just the country music audience, so he got rid of his hillbilly image and successfully crossed over to the pop charts in the 1950s, just several years after the release of "Mommy, Please Stay Home with Me."
At the time this song was released, country music was known for having sad songs and is still known for that to an extent. I think this song might've been one of the saddest songs in country music history.
Eddy went on to have one of the greatest career s in country music history with a total of 28 number one songs and over 85 million records sold throughout his career.
Thanks for reading. I'll be back soon!
