Welcome back to Country Music 4 Ever! Today is part nine of my "Story Behind the Song" series with a Patsy Cline classic, "Crazy."
Originally titled "Stupid," the song was written by Willie Nelson who at the time, was a little-known songwriter. Willie worked hard to get the song heard on Music Row. He originally had Billy Walker in mind to record it, but later he felt a female voice would work better for the song.
Patsy Cline hated the song the first time she heard it, but her husband, Charlie, pushed her to record the song so she trusted him and began recording the song.
Two months prior, Patsy was severely injured in a car accident that left her with a broken rib, which made it difficult to hit the high notes "Crazy" required. However, she pushed through it and did her final recording of "Crazy" while standing on crutches. You would never know it was a struggle based on the incredible vocal performance she gave in that song.
Sadly, just two years after releasing "Crazy," Patsy passed away in a plane crash alongside Cowboy Copas, Hawkshaw Hawkins, and Randy Hughes. Even though her career was cut short, she left her mark on country music with her emotionally raw voice and amazing story-telling ability. Patsy was one of the greats and will always be remembered for her contributions to the country music genre.
Thanks for reading. We are down to one final part of this series with a classic about a woman you want to keep away from you man. Stay tuned!
