Welcome back to Country Music 4 Ever! Today is the final part of my "Story Behind the Song" series with the classic, "Jolene," by the one and only, Dolly Parton.
"Jolene" was inspired by a red-haired bank teller who flirted with Dolly's husband, Carl, at the beginning of their marriage. Dolly explained in an interview that this woman was six feet tall and had all the stuff Dolly didn't have. Dolly would often joke with Carl that he spent an awful lot of time at the bank for all the more money they had at the time. However, it was all fun and games because they remained happily married for nearly 60 years before Carl passed away at age 82.
The bank tellers name was not Jolene. Dolly came up with that name after meeting a young girl at a meet and greet one night. Dolly asked the girl what her name was and she said it was Jolene. Dolly the told the girl she was going to write a song using her name because Jolene was such a pretty name. Dolly followed through with her promise to the girl and it became one of the biggest hits in country music history.
Dolly and Carl had one of the greatest love stories in country music. He rarely made public appearances with her because he wasn't into that type of thing, but Dolly always knew he had her back. Being committed to each other for nearly six decades shows how deep their love for each other truly was.
This series has been one of my favorite series I've ever done. It's been so much fun sharing these stories with you and even learning some new things myself in the process. I plan on doing some other series like this in the future and I also have some other fun things planned, so stay tuned for that. I'll be back soon!
