Welcome back to Country Music 4 Ever! Today I want to discuss one of the greatest careers in all of country music, Eddy Arnold. I was recently reading about the amazing career Eddy had and I don't think it's remembered as well as other country stars, but not many have come close to the success he had.
Eddy released his debut single, "Mommy, Please Stay Home With Me" in 1944, however it was his follow-up single, "Each Minute Seems a Million Years" that started his streak of 67 consecutive top ten hits. He had a total of 92 top ten hits throughout his entire career, 28 of which went to number one. Eddy also has a career total of 145 weeks spent at the number one position.
However, Eddy's career came to a halt in 1971 when his son, Dickey, was involved in a serious car accident. Dickey was pronounced dead when he arrived at the hospital, but was revived by medical staff. He spent nine weeks in a coma and when he regained consciousness, he had little memory of his life, very limited speech, and lost movement in several body parts.
Instead of going to a rehabilitation facility, Eddy stepped away from the spotlight to help Dickey do his rehab at home with help from Eddy's wife. This decision cost him in his professional life and his career never returned to how it was prior to the accident, but Eddy never regretted his decision. He knew his son was his number one priority, so it was a no-brainer for Eddy to make this choice.
Even though his career ended before it should've, Eddy will always be one of the greatest country stars of all time. Not many stars have come close to the incredible success he had. I think we can all agree he made the right decision to put fatherhood first.
Thanks for reading. I'll be back soon!
